What Is Cutting Disc

Often cutting discs, also known as cut-off wheels, are made from a solid abrasive disc. These discs are often used for cutting metal, they are composed of an abrasive mix of grit and adhesive that is formed into a thin, rigid disc with fiber webbing running through it for strength.

How Do I Use Cutting Discs Safely

Always be sure to comply with all accident prevention regulations when using grinding discs and cut-off wheels. The appropriate industrial safety pictograms are found on all discs and wheels. The cutting discs should always be replaced if showing any sign of damage which includes visible cracks, chips or any signs of bending or twists to the wheel. Cut-off wheels should be replaced when they hit their expiration date which can be found imprinted on the metal centre of the disc.

How to Choose a Cutting Disc

Material
There is an abrasive wheel that ensured optimal grinding results for all operations. The first step would be to determine the right wheel material for the job.
Aluminium Oxide – Suitable for ferrous metals and high-tensile strength alloys
Zirconia – For high torque grinders and heavy removal. Ferrous metal and high tensile strength alloys
Silicon Carbide – Non ferrous metals (copper, aluminium, bronze) and low tensile strength materials (cast iron, ductile iron)

Hardness of Material
The second consideration would be the hardness of material. During grinding, dulled grains in the abrasive wheel create friction and heat that melt the resin, which releases the dulled grain and expose new sharp ones.
Soft grade abrasives allows the material to be release more quickly than a hard abrasive – resulting in higher stock removal and less heat generation.
A hard grade abrasives would hold the grains till it is dull and shreds slower, resulting in less stock removal but longer lasting life.

Shape
There are mainly 4 kind of shapes of abrasive wheels
Type 27 – Depressed Centre Wheels
Type 41 – Flat Wheels
Type 42 – Semi Flexible WHeels
Type 11 – Cup Wheels

Do Cutting Discs Go out of Date

Whilst cutting discs and grinding discs are considered essential tools in many industries, it is a fact that they can also be the cause of serious injuries and even fatalities if used incorrectly or without the proper PPE.

All good quality discs will have an expiry date stamped on them somewhere. This is usually found on the central metal ring or on the disc itself. Occasionally it will be on a label attached to the disc.

It is important to note that this is a "use by" date that should never be exceeded.

The reason that cutting and grinding discs have a shelf life is that the resin that is used to bind the disc material together breaks down over time as it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. This means that an out of date disc could break up during use, with sharp fragments being ejected at a very high speed.

How Long Are Cutting Discs Valid For

Normally the validity of cutting discs (discs for cutting steel, stainless steel) is 3 years from the date of manufacture.

The way it is preserved has a direct impact on its useful life. Cutting discs should be stored in low humidity environments, without contact with water or chemical solvents.

Cutting Disc Storage Methods

Storage racks, bins, or drawers should be constructed to store each of the various types of discs in an orderly and safe manner. Make sure to use grinding wheels on a rotational basis to minimise the possibility of damage from lengthy storage.
Here are some suggestions:

● Cutting discs must be placed on a flat, rigid surface without any interleaving. They can also be stored by placing them on a round bar through the bore so they are suspended off the floor.

● Small wheels up to 80mm diameter, together with cones, plugs, mounted points and wheel may be stored in suitable bins, drawers or boxes.

● Large diameter wheels are best supported in racks with cushioned two-point cradle support to prevent the wheels from rolling. Using partitions also helps to make viewing and selecting discs easier and more efficient.

● For superabrasives, use the original packaging to protect the product during storage. Alternatively, use protective separators between cores, to prevent contact with an abrasive layer.

● Vitrified grinding wheels should be stored flat.

● Thick rim and hard grade cylinder and straight cup wheels may be stored on their periphery as for plain wheels.

● Soft grade, straight cup wheels, and all type 11 taper cup wheels should be stored base-to-base and rim-to-rim, to prevent chipping of edges and cracking of walls.

Does It Matter Which Way a Cutting Disc Go on a Grinder

Changing the disc is really easy, when your angle grinder arrives it will come with a 2-pin spanner like this, to begin with you will need to remove this flange by aligning the pins on the spanner with the holes on the flange then pressing the lock button at the back of the grinder to lock the wheel in place and begin to loosen the flange.

If you are fitting a stone, masonry or cutting disc ensure that the metal rim is facing downwards, then align the centre of your disc with the shaft of the of grinder and tighten the flange back on to lock it in place, with the flat side of the flange facing down.

When you are fitting a cutting disc, you'll need to place the disc face down, only this time you need to place the flange the opposite way with the raised part facing down. Whatever disc you fit you should always make sure that it's secure to the grinder. When changing discs or making any adjustments it's important that you make sure the angle grinder is unplugged.

Before you use the angle grinder it's really important that you wear the correct PPE, goggles, gloves, safety boots and a dust mask are essential before using this angle grinder.

Different Applications of Cutting Disc

General fabrication
In general metal fabrication, 0.045-inch disc diameters are common choices. With thinner materials, an operator may want to choose a 1-millimeter disc instead for greater precision, less heat generation, and fewer burrs that will require removal before welding. The choice of grain will likely depend on the material composition of the workpiece — higher-performing grains for structural steel and difficult-to-cut metals, contaminant-free discs for stainless steel.

Pipe fabrication
In metal pipe fabrication, the choice of cutting disc often depends on the diameter of the pipe to be cut. For a 3/4-inch or smaller pipe, a 4 1/2-inch diameter will usually be sufficient. For a pipe of up to 2 1/2 inches, a 6-inch cutting wheel is effective, and for a pipe of up to 3 1/2 inches, a 9-inch cutting wheel is often most suitable.
It's also advisable to choose the thinnest disc possible to minimize heat and friction and to use a type 1 disc for a deeper cut unless the application imposes a particular constraint. For larger pipe often found on the pipeline, a depressed-center cutting disc provides added clearance when working at a constrained angle, and 0.045-inch disc thickness is ideal for cutting applications in fabrication yards or on the right of way for field repairs.

Shipbuilding
When an operator is working on the confined, hard-to-access spaces of a ship, making a cutting disc last as long as possible is often a priority. For this reason, the operator will often want to choose a harder, potentially longer-lasting disc. However, when operators must use air tools whose hoses have stretched over long distances to access difficult areas of the ship, the tools may be underpowered. In this case, discs with a soft bond will be ideal because they make it easier to maintain a fast cut. In shipbuilding, the work material often influences the cutting disc selection. When working with aluminum, an operator may want to select a cutting disc that will not load or gum up.

Welding preparation
Preparing for welding typically involves exact metal cutting. With a basic cut-off operation, precision is not critical, but with complex work or repairs that need to preserve the initial aesthetic qualities of the material, precision can save time and money. Using a 0.045-inch cutting disc — a little more than a millimeter thick — is common in welding to allow for precise and accurate cuts. For precise cuts on thin sheet metal, profiles, and small diameter rods, a 1-millimeter wheel will provide smooth cutting and exceptional control for clean, ultra-precise cuts.

Railways
Modern railways use hard-to-cut alloy steels, so a high-performance cutting disc is necessary for high-speed gas saws. A self-sharpening zirconia alumina grain that retains a high cutting performance throughout the life of the wheel offers excellent performance.

Construction
Building and construction sites feature a wide variety of metal cutting applications. Operators often look for a disc that can do it all, from cutting off rebar to making long cuts on sheet metal. Many times, an aluminum oxide wheel provides the right mix of versatility, performance, and price.
