Types of 8 Inch Cutting Wheels

There are two basic configurations of 8 inch cutting wheel

Type 41(1): This is a flat cutting wheel that allows for a maximum depth of cut.

Type 42(27): This design features more of a rigid feel while cutting, enhanced operator visibility of the cut, and the ability to flush cut as the raised hub allows for the locking nut to be recessed. These wheels are also available with our 5/8-11 quick change hub for ease of mounting.

Choosing the Right 8 Inch Cutting Wheel

Selection of a wheel for any cutting job involves several factors. The desired end result is usually most important, whether it involves high-speed production cutting, or a precision, fine finish cutting application.

Material: Type of material to be cut: Its hardness, size and shape, quality of cut sought.

Machine: Type to be used: Chop-stroke, oscillating or swing-frame, make and model, size, horsepower, spindle speed, how the workpiece is secured, wet or dry cutting.

Wheel: Dimensional features of wheel currently in use: Diameter, thickness, arbor and reinforcement pattern, manufacturers specifications (name, grade, rpm).

● Use a soft grade when:
Machine has low horsepower.
Good finish is important - fine grains normally used to provide minimum burr.
Operators cut slowly.

● Use a medium grade when:
Softer grades do not provide enough cuts - longer wheel life is required.
Cutting normal materials. Machine horsepower will support faster cutting rates.

● Use a hard grade when:
Maximum wheel life is sought.
Machine has adequate horsepower (1 hp per inch of wheel diameter is recommended).
Burr and finish requirements are minimal. (note that fast cuts will produce a reasonably good finish)

General 8 Inch Cutting Wheel Safety Recommendations

Several best practices and recommendations for safe use apply to 8 inch cutting wheels of all sizes and types

● Use the proper guard: Having the correct guard on the tool is an important part of safe 8 inch cutting wheel use. Right-angle grinders - the most used tool with 8 inch cutting wheels - typically only come with a grinding guard. 8 inch cutting wheels, however, require a cutting guard with a half-moon-shaped, 180-degree coverage to provide added protection for the user. Using a grinding guard with a type F41 flat 8 inch cutting wheel or a type F42 depressed center 8 inch cutting wheel does not provide that additional protection. What is even worse is not using a tool guard at all. Always have the proper guard in place when using a 8 inch cutting wheel.

● Wear the necessary Personal protective equipment (PPE): Personal protective equipment should be worn when using a 8 inch cutting wheel. PPE includes safety glasses, a face shield, ear protection, gloves, flame-resistant clothing, a leather apron, and safety shoes. Hard hats and/or welding caps can also protect the head from sparks during metal cutting.

● Conduct a visual inspection: Inspect the 8 inch cutting wheel and tool before use. Replace with a new wheel if there are cracks or other signs of wear or damage. Even if the wheel is still on the tool, the tool could have been dropped or knocked off the tool rack, so it's important to always check for damage before use. Also, jog the tool for a few seconds before using it to ensure it's running true.

● Mount the wheel correctly: Most 8 inch cutting wheels have a stamped metal ring around the wheel hub. The wheel should be mounted with that stamped insert facing the spindle on the motor side of the tool. This will provide a flush mount because there is less chance for grit or abrasive debris to be present on that side of the wheel.

● Secure the workpiece: Be sure the workpiece is held tightly in a vice or clamped so there's no chance it will move, bend, or roll once the cut is started. If the workpiece moves during the cut, it could twist and pinch the wheel, potentially causing it to break apart.

● Don't flex a 8 inch cutting wheel: During a cut, never try to flex or bend the wheel to make a curved cut. This introduces side loading and can fracture the wheel.

● Never grind with a 8 inch cutting wheel: A 8 Inch cutting wheel doesn't have the fiberglass reinforcement that a grinding wheel does, so it can be dangerous to grind with a 8 inch cutting wheel. Only use a 8 inch cutting wheel for cutting. Combination wheels can be used for cutting and grinding and are marked accordingly.

● Don't push a wheel through a cut: 8 Inch cutting wheels should only have the weight of the tool as they go through a cut. Forcing the wheel with unnecessary pressure can cause the wheel to slip and bind. Too much pressure also decreases product life.

● Use a better abrasive for harder materials: Some specialty metals can be difficult to cut. In these cases, choose a 8 inch cutting wheel with a higher-performing abrasive grain like a ceramic. This helps you cut efficiently and reduces the possibility of the wheel glazing due to excessive heat.

● Watch the spark path: Sparks are created with any type of 8 inch cutting wheel. The spark path can be altered depending on the approach used for the cut. Be mindful of the spark path and any items that could be damaged or coworkers who are in the area.

Does a 8 Inch Cutting Wheel Have an Expiration Date

Resin-bonded wheels, including portable wheels, should be used within two years from the date of manufacture. This assumes you've stored the wheels according to the manufacturer's recommendations. While it may be possible to use resin-bonded wheels after the two-year mark when they are stored properly, you should always examine any wheels more than two years old. Consider having older wheels inspected or speed-tested to determine if any degradation is present.

To help improve shelf life, store wheels in a dry, protected area free from extreme variations in temperature and far away from solvents. Establish a storage system that encourages you to use your oldest wheels first. And never leave a wheel attached to a tool overnight.

Abrasive Type for 8-Inch Cutting Wheel

8 inch cutting wheel materials do the cutting, and each type of 8 inch cutting wheel offers a different balance of cost, durability, and performance.

Aluminum Oxide: Versatile, inexpensive and durable, aluminum oxide is a good go-to 8 inch cutting wheel for everyday jobs. Aluminum oxide will cut through steel, as well as softer metals like brass, annealed iron, and steel alloys.

Zirconia Alumina: A mix of aluminum oxide and zirconium oxide, this 8 inch cutting wheel is durable and fast. Zirconia is a naturally occuring mineral with extremely high fracture toughness, which produces a high metal removal rate when cutting through hardened materials like tempered steel. Zirconia also offers superior heat dissipation, which can be important when cutting through thick steel plate.

Silicon Carbide: This super sharp 8 inch cutting wheel makes quick work of soft materials. Silicon carbide naturally has a very sharp edged grain. The cutting material microscopically fractures as it wears, creating new razor-edged cutting faces throughout the wheel's life.

Ceramic Aluminum Oxide: Ceramic wheels are extremely durable and versatile. This 8 inch cutting wheel is made by heating aluminum oxide in a kiln, a process known as sintering. 8 inch cutting wheel ceramics are designed to microfracture in a controlled manner. The glass-like ceramic aluminum oxide grains continuously shatter as they cuts, keeping the cutting edge sharp.

Advantages of 8 Inch Cutting Wheel

● Wide range of application for various materials with different hardness's.

● Long lifetime as well as low wear of the 8 inch cutting wheel.

● Premium abrasive particles enable the finest cutting surfaces, which shortens the following grinding steps.

● The synthetic resin bond allows dull abrasive particles to break out evenly during the cutting process.

FAQ

Q: What is 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: 8 Inch cutting wheels, or cut-off wheels, are abrasive wheels designed for clean cuts through metals. Cutting wheels come in two main types; Type 1 and Type 27. Type 1 cut-off wheels are flat for the most cutting depth, while Type 27 cutting wheels have depressed centers to allow better visibility while cutting. The grain that makes up a cutting wheel's composition determines its cutting speed and life span.

Q: Can you use a 8 inch cutting wheel on masonry?

A: 8 Inch cutting wheels contain either zirconia or aluminum oxide, depending on their intended use. Silicon-carbide abrasive particles are sharper and harder, and thus continue cutting efficiently on concrete or other masonry surfaces.

Q: How do you store 8 inch cutting wheels?

A: Thin organic bonded wheels, such as those used for cutting off, should be laid flat on a flat steel surface or similarly rigid material away from excessive heat, moisture, and other liquids to prevent warpage. Loose blotters should not be placed between stacked thin wheels.

Q: Can you sand with a 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: Angle grinders are a multi-use sanding tool that are compatible with a wide range of wheels and discs, including resin fiber discs, overlap discs, 8 inch cutting wheels, grinding wheels, and much more. This allows for several different types of sanding applications!

Q: How do you use a 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: When using a 8 inch cutting wheel, we recommend using a two handed golf like grip to hold and guide the tool and go for a right angle. If you angle the wheel in the cut, the wheel will probably break.

Q: What thickness 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: Wheel thickness is the most important factor to consider while choosing the right 8 inch cutting wheel. For general purpose cutting of stainless or mild steel choose a 1mm or 1.6mm thick wheel. For cutting through hard metals choose standard thin 0. 045 inch & ultra-thin 1 mm 8 inch cutting wheels.

Q: Can you put 8 inch cutting wheels on angle grinder?

A: For flat cutting discs, mount the flange with the flat side towards the wheel. Use the key or wrench to fix tightly to the grinder. Once the wheel is in place, it should not move or rotate. Take care not to over tighten the flange, this might damage the disc and make it hard to remove the stub when you're finished.

Q: What is the difference between 40 grit and 60 grit 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: Typically, 40 grit is used for grinding metal quickly, 60 grit will provide good stock removal but with a smoother finish and 80 grit is better for shaping and light stock removal. Diamond blades are a popular choice for use with angle grinders.

Q: Do 8 inch cutting wheels expire?

A: 8 Inch cutting wheels should be replaced when they hit their expiration date. This can be found imprinted on the metal center of the disc. Time, UV light, changes in temperature, humidity, and other storing conditions cause the bonding agents that keep the disc together to break down.

Q: Will a 8 inch cutting wheel cut hardened steel?

A: 8 Inch cutting wheels are essential tools for precise steel cutting, offering efficiency and safety. Whether you need to cut mild steel or hard metals like stainless steel, choosing the right type, width, and thickness is crucial.

Q: How many types of 8 inch cutting wheels are there?

A: 8 Inch cutting wheels come in a few different types. Some common types are type 1, type 27, type 41, and type 42, where the various numbers signify the wheels' different shapes and properties.

Q: What is a 8 inch cutting wheel used for?

A: 8 Inch cutting wheels, or 8 inch cutting wheels, differ from grinding wheels in their function and structure. Where grinding wheels use an abrasive to grind large pieces of material off a workpiece from a shallow angle, 8 inch cutting wheels typically make narrow, precise cuts at 90-degree angles.

Q: Can 8 inch cutting wheels be used to grind material?

A: Using a 8 inch cutting wheel for side grinding can have serious consequences. The photographs seen here show what can happen to a cut-off wheel when the side is used for deburring or grinding. The workpiece can cut through the reinforcing side fiberglass weakening the wheel. This may result in wheel breakage and injury.

Q: What is the difference between a type 1 and a type 27 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: Type 1 grinding wheels are flat and used for a variety of grinding and cutting tasks on flat surfaces, edges, and angles. Type 27 grinding wheels have a saucer shape with a depressed center, making them ideal for grinding and cutting on contoured surfaces and hard-to-reach areas.

Q: What is the difference between grinding wheel and 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: 8 Inch cutting wheels or 8 inch cutting wheels have different applications and structures than grinding wheels. 8 inch cutting wheels cut small material workpieces at 90-degree angles, whereas grinding wheels grind large material workpieces from a low angle. As a result, 8 inch cutting wheels are quite thinner than grinding wheels.

Q: Can a 8 inch cutting wheel cut wood?

A: First of all, you should never cut wood with regular angle grinder cutting discs.

Q: Can a 8 inch cutting wheel cut stainless steel?

A: It is essential to choose a 8 inch cutting wheel made from abrasives compatible with stainless steel to ensure the workpiece isn't contaminated. The right 8 inch cutting wheel for stainless steel will increase efficiency, reduce rework and eliminate cross-contamination.

Q: Why do 8 inch cutting wheels break?

A: Improper machine conditions. Loose wheel spindle, excessive end play, and loose or vibrating machine parts such as the work-table and the work holder may cause the wheel to bend in the cut and break.

Q: What are 8 inch cutting wheels made of?

A: High-quality cutting discs are made of resinoid-bonded abrasives. The bonding agent, resinoid, holds the wheel and the abrasive material together. As it wears away through use, fresh sharp grains are exposed to continue cutting to extend the long life of the product.
The most commonly used abrasives embedded in the resinoid wheels are aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.
Reinforced cutoff wheels are the most durable cut wheels. They are reinforced with fiberglass to provide extra strength to last long and avoid breaking from extra pressure forced on it.

Q: What is the safety standard for a 8 inch cutting wheel?

A: Always have the proper guard in place when using a 8 inch cutting wheel. Wear the necessary PPE: Personal protective equipment that should be worn when using a 8 inch cutting wheel include safety glasses, a face shield, ear protection, gloves, flame resistant clothing, leather apron and safety shoes.
