The difference between cutting wheel and grinding wheel

Nov 07, 2024

Although cutting wheels and grinding wheels are similar in some aspects, they have significant differences in terms of use, structure, materials, working methods, and shape and size. Choosing the right tool depends on specific machining needs and material properties.
The difference between cutting wheels and grinding wheels is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

use:
Cutting wheel: Mainly used for cutting various materials, including metals and non-metals. Cutting wheels are designed to separate materials at high speeds.

Grinding Wheel: Mainly used for grinding, polishing and polishing. Grinding wheels are more versatile and can be used to remove burrs, weld flashes or other irregularities on the surface of materials, as well as perform fine surface preparation.

Construction and Materials:
Cutting Wheel: Usually thin to allow for easier cutting. The cutting wheel is mainly made of fiberglass, resin and abrasives, and has strong impact resistance and bending strength. Common types include resin cutting wheels and diamond cutting wheels.

Grinding Wheel: Usually thicker to facilitate grinding and polishing. Grinding wheels are made of abrasives and binders, and are made through processes such as compacting, drying and roasting. The characteristics of the grinding wheel depend on factors such as abrasive, particle size, bond, etc.

How it works:
Cutting wheel: When in use, the cutting wheel will rotate at high speed and cut the material through its sharp edge. The lateral force of the cutting wheel is small to reduce material waste and resistance during cutting.

Grinding wheel: When in use, the grinding wheel will also rotate at high speed, but its function is to achieve grinding and polishing through the friction between the abrasive and the material surface. The grinding wheel can withstand large lateral forces and is suitable for various surface treatment tasks.

Shape and size:
Cutting wheel: usually thinner, the diameter may be the same, but the thickness is generally around 1mm to reduce material waste and cutting resistance.

Grinding Wheel: Typically thicker, the diameter and thickness can be adjusted for specific uses to accommodate different grinding and polishing needs.
